CES is just around the corner and Oneplus is going to showcase their first ever device at CES. The leaks are all over the web, (Yes, 2020 just started and we already have our leaks flowing in, lol) well not a leak to be precise, it's kind of a teaser that Oneplus itself shared with the world. The device is apparently called 'Oneplus Concept One'.
If you haven't watched the promo yet, I would urge you to do that (watch here) first, before reading any further, because I'm about to share my opinion and frankly, I'm not impressed by the device if it's going to be what it seems it is. So, assuming you clicked on that link above and saw the first look of the Oneplus Concept One, let me share my views on it and let me know if you guys agree with it in the comments.
It's 2020, we already have seen a couple of folding devices in late 2019 and everyone is expecting to see a whole new generation of foldables in 2020, but sadly the teased Oneplus device doesn't seem to be one of those, which is big upset for me atleast. Concept One looks like just another premium looking device with a clean glass body design and also being a Oneplus device I know it's going to have the latest and greatest of the hardware along with the blazingly fast Oneplus software (Oxygen or Hydrogen or whatever element it may be :P).
Surprisingly, the highlight of the device is a disappearing rear camera. Really? Oneplus thinks that this is what people are looking for in their next device. It's not their fault though, Oneplus has partnered with Mclaren and they've been launching Mclaren edition devices in the past, which are slightly upgraded versions of the "normal variants" of the same device and by upgraded I meant both in terms of price and specs.
I think engineers at Oneplus must've gotten bored of just slapping on a new back and couple of extra gigs of ram in the same device and launching it again, so this time around they decided to put in some effort, they reached out to folks at Mclaren asked them if they could borrow their glass color shifting technology which they use for their sunroofs and use them for their camera module for the Mclaren edition device in 2020. Sounds cool, right? It did to them atleast.
As for the rest, I think it would be correct to assume that Concept One will sport a high refresh rate OLED display similar to it's predecessors (Oneplus 7 family). It's also going to rock solid in battery department with super fast charging similar to other Oneplus devices in the past. So, there's not a lot to complain about but to be honest I don't think having best hardware and software with one or two "cool" tricks up your sleeve is going to win the competition in 2020. And I say that because believe me or not but this will be the new normal in 2020, every other device you'll see will check all these boxes, what is going to make one device stand out are the new features that people are excited about in 2020 like an under display camera or a foldable screen.
I've always been a Oneplus fan in the past as they have always delivered what we want. Back then, all people wanted was device which could provide them the same user experience like any other flagship device, they wanted the latest specs which at that time could only be seen on expensive flagships. The picture has completely changed now and I think Oneplus knows that as well. So, I'm hoping that we'll see a much more 2020ish device from Oneplus later during the year. Concept One should have remained a concept is all that I've to say!
Let me know your thoughts on the Oneplus Concept One. Would you guys want to buy it?
