LCD Panel with OLED quality

When talking about displays we have two major display panels that are widely used across the industry - the LCD panel and the OLED panel. Both these display panels have their set of advantages and disadvantages. For years, the industry leaders have tried to find a true balance between the benefits offered by the LCD panel and an OLED panel and combine them into a single piece of tech which can suit the needs of even larger set of the consumer population.

Now, we have the Mini LED-backlit LCD or the M-LED (as we like to call it), the Mini LED-backlit LCD panel is sort of middeground between an OLED display and an LCD display. This Mini LED-backlit LCD panel brings together the benefits of both OLED and traditional LCD panel into one display panel. A few questions that might arise in your mind would be that how is this panel different from the traditional LCD or an OLED for that matter? Is it an LCD or some cheaper OLED? The answer is that the Mini LED-Backlit LCD display is still an LCD display panel that's why we still use LCD in the name. But, what you all might find confusing is that we are calling it an LED, isn't it?

While some of you would know the difference between an LED and an LCD, but for the majority of the readers I would like to explain it briefly. So, a fact that might surprise you!! There is nothing like an LED display panel, Yes, you read it right. But, you would argue that you own a LED TV or a monitor or any device which you might have owned that marketed itself as having an LED display. But, all these were infact LCD displays with the source backlight being an LED.

To make things clear, LCD display panel need to have a source of light for them to work, in devices which this source of light is an LED, the manufacturers term it as LED display even if it is still infact a LCD display panel. In case of OLEDs or Organic LED display panels, there is no single source of light but there are millions of smaller light sources, which are the pixels itself. So, in an OLED each individual pixel has it's own light source, which is infact the reason that OLED display panels have much greater contrast and darker blacks as each individual pixel can be completely turned off to produce blacks.

The Mini LED-backlit LCD combines the principle used in OLED displays into the LCD. In a Mini LED-backlit LCD instead of having a couple of sources of light at the back of the panel or at the edges (edge lighting in LCDs), manufacturers will now use thousands of small LEDs or mini LEDs

for lighting the panel. This would result in better contrast and black levels comparable to that of an OLED without having a greater impact on the cost of production.

Will it be the future of displays or not, we'll have to wait for it to see. But, one thing is for sure if this technology sees the light of the day then there is no stopping it from replacing the long time hailed champion of the industry. Let us know your thoughts in the comment section down below!!
