Spying on your WhatsApp!

Just when people were about to get out of the Facebook data leak disaster, made popular by the #deleteFacebook campaign, another Facebook owned social networking application's security is the hot topic in the town. The application is the infamous WhatsApp.

If you use WhatsApp, which I believe you probably do, then your privacy might be at risk provided someone in your contact list uses an Apple device and also is ready to spend $2 for breaching your privacy. While, you scratch your heads off thinking what you just read above, let me tell you that there is an application on the Apple App Store that is capable of doing such a thing.

whatsapp privacy put at risk by chatwatch

The application goes by the name ChatWatch. And as the name suggests - ChatWatch is a kind of spying application that keeps a close watch on your chat activity on WhatsApp. The app exploits the fact that in WhatsApp, anyone who has your WhatsApp registered number saved in his/her contact list can view your online or offline status.

ChatWatch, periodically checks the online status of the person who is under the app's radar and generates a report of his/her online activity. The report can be used to know some very interesting and very personal facts about the user under surveillance like -
  • How often does he/she checks his/her WhatsApp messages?
  • At what time does he/she opens the app or in most cases wake up (as that is the first thing most people do)
  • At what time does he/she goes to bed?
Also, the application can give you some very scary predictions for example, it can analyze the online status reports of two different users and then predict how often they both chat with each other based on the overlapping of online periods of both users. A feature that is hailed by many as a perfect tool for spying on your partners.

Other interesting posts -
It is very shocking to know that how much can be known about a person by just checking his online status reports leave alone the chat data that companies like Facebook own. Which makes me wonder how much potential damage has been done to the privacy of the users whose data was allegedly leaked in the facebook data leak scandal by Cambridge Analytica.

The app - ChatWatch although has now been removed from the Apple App Store after repeated complaints from users for policy violation. But, it certainly rings a bell in the minds of people using these data hungry apps and sites, as how secure their data is in the hands of these so called tech giants, when there exists app like ChatWatch and who knows how many others are there which might have gone unnoticed.

We will soon be posting an interesting post for those who wish to secure their data from being misused by the hands of the biggies out there, so stay tuned for that. Meanwhile, let us know what are your opinions on the ongoing privacy battle in the comment section below.
