Will future smartphones be Top NOTCH ?

The smartphone industry has always been the one that has attracted users every year with new innovations that leave us wondering. The smartphone industry has always been about innovation but if we go by the recent trends in this field then all we can see is smartphone manufacturers just buffing up the specifications of their devices be it in the form of a SoC upgrade or just a sheer increase in the megapixel count of the camera.

But yes there are manufacturers like Apple and Samsung and even some Chinese ones (more on that later). Apple came up with a dual camera setup on their iPhone 7 which as expected became a trend in the industry and now pretty much every flagship device has that dual camera setup on flaunting at the back except Google's own Pixel devices, which in their next revision will probably feature it too. So, that has been an innovation.

Apple also started a revolution with the introduction of biometric security in a smartphone with a fingerprint sensor aka Touch ID. Today we see every smartphone ranging from the budget to the premium category having that fingerprint sensor placed somewhere on the device. So, innovation died again!! but wait there have been some advancements in the technology with some manufacturers like Vivo now flashing an in-display fingerprint sensor but still it's more of an evolution rather than a revolution so, sorry Vivo!!

Samsung came up with the edge display on their Galaxy S6 Edge and has kept on improving the design with every iteration of their flagships each year. This also started a revolution for making smartphones with ever so thin bezels and today we see smartphones which are almost bezel-less. Apple also followed this trend and came up with their edition of bezel-less smartphone - the iPhone X.

But what made iPhone X, a smartphone worth debating was the notch sitting at the top of the display. The notch received a mixed response from the users as some complained that the notch interfered with the daily tasks such as watching videos or playing games that one usually does on a smartphone. Personally, I used the device for sometime and felt that you get used to the notch and it doesn't feel odd after certain period of time.

But, even though the notch was not widely accepted, smartphone manufacturers are still blatantly copying the notch design and some of them not even using a well optimised software for it just for the sake of mocking the iPhone X and gain some attention and hopefully some buyers for the crap that they have to offer. Mobile world Congress, held at Barcelona this year was flooded with such top 'notch' devices.

So, has it really come to this? Just copying someone else's design? And yes Apple wasn't the first to come up with the notch. The first one was Essential, a company founded by Andy Rubin (one of the founder members of Android) in its somewhat less popular Essential Phone. Apple just made it much popular with their iPhone X.

I believe that we have reached a point where all we can see is a ecosystem of smartphones that are all the same atleast in terms of design. This is sad!! We need to see more innovation, some more creativity atleast I look forward to it and I am optimistic that we will see some more innovation in the industry even if the present scenario seems quite doomed.
