It has barely been five months since the OnePlus 5 is out, but it already has a successor: the OnePlus 5T.
This quick release cycle
shouldn’t be a surprise for anyone familiar with OnePlus history, but it’s
still a bit upsetting for those who had bought the OnePlus 5 recently.
Rest aside, the OnePlus 5T
is a surely a great phone. Not only because it takes everything that
made the OnePlus 5 one of my favourites of 2017 but it also adds in an 18:9
display, smaller bezels and an improved secondary camera.

Design
Unlike
with the 5, the 5T is only available in the Midnight Black hue, though I suspect OnePlus to release a gold or grey variant later down the line. The biggest design change is
that the fingerprint scanner now sits below the rear camera sensor,
rather than on the phone’s front. The scanner is perfectly
positioned just where your finger naturally rests.
The
fingerprint scanner has been moved to the back because the front of the
phone has been completely redesigned as the bigger bezels are gone and gone is the home button and so are those capacitive keys beside it. You’ve now got an 18:9 aspect ratio, 6-inch nearly edge to edge display.
Having a 6-inch display in a
body that’s only slightly taller than the 5.5-inch OnePlus 5 is still an
impressive achievement and a good selling point for the OnePlus 5T.
Rest all things are the same as you get your privacy or alert slider, the volume rockers and the lock button on the exact same places as the OnePlus 5.
Performance
There is really little much to say in this department, the Snapdragon 835 chipset along with the hefy 6 GB or 8 GB ram in the pricier variant handle pretty much every task you throw at it.
There is no lag whatsoever in between switching applications but ram management is something to look after for OnePlus as it is where the company had always struggled in the past too.
Gaming, Multi-tasking, FHD Video Playback, Internet Browsing etc. all are buttery smooth, thanks to the processor and the coupled large sized ram.
Camera and Battery
Even though there are still two cameras on
the back of this phone, they work very differently than how they did on
the OnePlus 5. Previously, the secondary sensor was telephoto lens, with a
longer focal-length for a bit more freedom with zooming.
That’s been ditched here and
now both cameras have the same focal-length and f/1.7 aperture. The
‘main’ sensor is still 16-megapixels, but those pixels are much bigger
than the pixels in secondary 20-megapixel sensor.
Visit this for camera samples.
The battery is non-removable which is a standard now in 2017 when the size of the phone is shrinking and the manufacturers are busy fitting everything inside a unibody design and in a much more compact place.
But still it has a 3300 mah battery which also supports dash charge so in all the OnePlus 5T will not disappoint you in this department.
Verdict
At just under $500, OnePlus 5T is surely a thing to recommend. It does have it set of cons but that's not a deal breaker at all. All I could wish for is a slightly better camera. Rest everything is perfect for this device.
