Internet is the life support system for today's generation and no matter how much we do not want to accept it, the truth is that we can't live without internet in today's world, not that we would die if deprived of the internet but one would definitely not want to get bored and the solution to this boredom is the internet.
From the smartwatches we wear, the mobile phones we use everyday, smart TVs and every other device that we will possibly use in our life makes use of the internet and the services provided over it. But, just having an internet connection is not enough, what we all crave for is superfast download and upload speeds for the best possible user experience.
You might have also searched the internet for finding the solutions for the same problem and the chances are that you haven't yet found out something convincing and more importantly free of cost, because who wants to spend money to save a bit more time. After all, time is cheaper than money... or was it the other way round?? Well, lets forget it for now and focus ourselves on the problem - how to increase internet speed for free ?
Before, you all start criticising me for this clickbait title, I want you to know that this is a working trick and this might improve your internet access speed by a little to a significant amount in some cases. The trick here is to change your DNS server and move to a faster DNS server.
For those who do not know what a DNS server is. I would be more than happy to tell you. DNS stands for Domain Name System. The Domain Name System (DNS) is the phonebook of the Internet. Humans
access information online through domain names, like nytimes.com or
espn.com. Web browsers interact through Internet Protocol (IP)
addresses. DNS translates domain names to IP addresses so browsers can
load Internet resources.
Each device connected to the Internet has a unique IP
address which other machines use to find the device. DNS servers
eliminate the need for humans to memorize IP addresses such as
192.168.1.1 (in IPv4), or more complex newer alphanumeric IP addresses
such as 2400:cb00:2048:1::c629:d7a2 (in IPv6).
What then? We know what a DNS is but how does that improve our internet speed? The answer to this lies in the fact how does a DNS works. As you might know till now that a DNS translates the urls or domain names to corresponding IP addresses. So, some time is required for this process to complete. If you think of it like searching through a phonebook for a contact then you can very well relate to how much does the ease of looking up a contact number from a large phonebook can affect the entire user experience.
There are a lot of DNS servers that are being used for very long time including Google DNS server (8.8.8.8), now there is another DNS in the town. This is the cloudflare's DNS (1.1.1.1) and cloudflare claims that it is the world's fastest privacy first DNS server. This 1.1.1.1 DNS allows users to access internet with reduced latency as compared to other DNS servers.
And even if switching to 1.1.1.1 does not improve your internet access speeds significantly it is still a viable option that you should consider. As cloudflare claims that they do not store your information and user privacy is their top concern which is rare in today's scenario (Facebook...anyone?)
So, lets just cut the crap now and dive into the details to how to get it working.
The steps are quite easy and almost same for any device that you are using for accessing internet be it an android smartphone, an iphone, a desktop (linux, windows, mac etc). All you need to do is to dive deep into your internet settings and change the DNS from your existing one to 1.1.1.1 and backup DNS to 1.0.0.1 and you are done. You can also change the settings of your wifi router if you use wifi and prevent the hassle of modifying it in each and every device you own.
A point that must be made clear here is that switching you DNS will only improve your access speed. It will not improve or increase your bandwidth speed which includes watching videos and downloading stuff because all that depends on the actual downlink and uplink speeds that you pay for. Changing the DNS just improves one of the steps involved in the entire process.
